Speecial Assignment

This assignment has 4 goals:
• To introduce you to major concepts in science through a non-classroom methods of learning.
• To introduce you to key terms that we will be using in class.
• To allow you to earn strong grades to start the year out with confidence.
• To decrease the volume of information you will learn during the school year.

Assignment #1:
Letter of Introduction
Your first assignment is to successfully send me an email

• Email me a “Letter of Introduction” write to me at scott4ster@gmail.com (see instructions).

Your email must adhere to the following guidelines:
• Use clear, full sentences with correct punctuation.
• Use the spell check to insure that your using correct spelling.
• Do not use SMS or cellphone text language! Do not abbreviate words like you would when texting a friend. Rather, use a formal style of communication in the letter like you would use when writing to your college professor. This will be good practice for communicating with your real professors in the future.
• Address the email to me at scott4ster@gmail.com
• Make the subject heading: Letter of Introduction: (Your first and last name). Do not include the parentheses; just add your first and last name.
• Begin the letter with a formal salutation, like “Dr. Scott,” or “Dear Dr. Scott.” Do not begin the letter Hi, Howdy, hello or in any other informal way.
• Now introduce yourself and tell me a little bit about yourself
o What do you like to do (hobbies, sports, music, interests)?
o What do you like most about science and why you want to learn study science.
o What in science are you are you hoping to learn?
o What are your strengths in science and what are your weaknesses?
• End the email with a formal closing, like “Sincerely.” Then skip a line and write your name below the closing like you would if you were writing a hard copy letter.

After you send me this first assignment you will receive a PowerPoint presentation within 48 hours that will cover our first week's lectures and prepare you for the exciting lab and field trips we will conduct. If you do not receive a return email from me then in all likelihood I've not seen your email and it would be a good idea to resend it.

Due to the nature of the large size of the PPT's I'll be sending I recommend you use a Gmail account that can handle file attachments up to 10 Gigabytes in size.

It is a good habit, during the school year to always check your email on the weekends as I will assign chapter quizzes or have you complete activities on websites later this year.

Assignment #2: Digital Scavenger Hunt

For this part of your assignment, you will be familiarizing yourself with science terms that we will be using at different points throughout the year. In the following is the list of terms. Do your best to chose terms that you think you will need to know in your forthcoming class, be it Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Environmental Science.

• Select 30 terms

Define all 30 of these terms in an e-mail to me.

The Subject of the e-mail must be:
“Science Digital Scavenger Hunt: <Insert Your Name Here>”
(Do not include the quote marks or the brackets, just the words)

  • Remember, all e-mails to me must be in the formal, professional style with a formal salutation, formal closing, and include your name at the end as if you signed a letter.

• “Collect” 30 items from the list of terms below.
When I say “collect”, I mean you should collect that item by finding it and taking a photograph (digital or paper printed) of that item. You will upload your photographs with corresponding explanations/ captions to me via e-mail. You do not need to find the exact item on the list, say for example, if it is an internal part to an organism, but you must apply the term to the specimen you find and briefly explain in your document how this specimen represents the term. This can be done by adding text next to your picture in a Microsoft Word or Pages document.

If you choose the term “phloem,” you could submit a photograph you have taken of a plant leaf or a plant stem and then explain in your document what phloem is and specifically where phloem is in your specimen.

You cannot use an image from any publication or the Web. You must have taken the photograph yourself. The best way to prove that is to place an item in all of your photographs that only you could have added each time, something that you might usually have on you like a pen or a coin or a key or your phone, etc.

Some specimens may be used for more than one item, but all must be from something that you have found in nature. Take a walk around your yard, neighborhood, and town. DON’T SPEND ANY MONEY! Research what the term means and in what organisms it can be found… and then go out and find one.

You may work with other students in the class to complete this project, but each student must turn in his or her own project with a unique set of terms chosen. There are 110 choices… probability says there is a very small chance that any two students will have most of the same 30 terms chosen.
